Grass Court Pickleball Orientation / Demonstration Sessions

Brothers Field, Gibsons — BC’s Sunshine Coast (June & July)

Before we launch group sessions, leagues, or ladder play, we are offering booked orientation and demonstration sessions at Brothers Field in Gibsons.

This is our grass-court version of pickleball. We call it PicnicBall because it is designed for parks, fields, lawns, and the kind of social play that can happen almost anywhere you can lay out a court — or a picnic blanket — on grass.

But the sport is simple: grass-court pickleball. The game works on grass because we use a specialized ball that bounces the same way a pickleball does on asphalt.

These are sign-up only sessions. They are not drop-in.

Each session is 45 minutes and runs under the direction of a Sea to Sky Sports pickleball coach. We will go over the basic rules, techniques, shot types, and simple strategies so players can understand the game before regular play begins.

You can book a session as:

  • an individual

  • a pair

  • a small group

  • singles, doubles, or both, depending on numbers

Grass-court pickleball (PicnicBall) is open to all levels. You can be completely new to racket and paddle sports, or you can be a strong pickleball player looking for a way to play without having to compete for limited court space.

Our coaches are certified pickleball coaches and regional champions in singles and/or doubles pickleball.

Why Grass Court Pickleball?

Grass court pickleball — which we call PicnicBall — keeps the basic play of pickleball but changes the surface and the ball.

The result is a game that is still recognizably pickleball, but softer, quieter, and easier to set up in more places.

The ball we use is slightly slower than a standard pickleball, giving players more time to react. It also has a grippier feel off the paddle, so shots tend to come off more reliably, especially for newer players. That makes the game easier to learn without taking away the strategy, movement, and shot-making that experienced players enjoy.

Grass also makes sense.

There are only so many hardcourts. They are often full, noisy, expensive to build, and hard to book. Grass fields are far more common and provide a way to create playable courts in parks and open spaces without waiting years for new dedicated facilities.

PicnicBall is not meant to replace pickleball. It is a way to make the game more accessible, more flexible, and a little easier on the body.

For beginners, it is a softer entry point. For experienced players, it is pickleball on a new surface, with a softer rhythm, and offering similar technical, tactical, and strategic challenges.
